A team of French rescue experts began hunting through a huge expanse of debris on the outskirts of the Indonesian city of Palu on Saturday, searching for any sign of life.
During the night, seven people were rescued and four dead bodies were pulled out of the rubble of the commercial building, which had caved in on a ground floor supermarket, officials said.
The Red Cross said the situation was "nightmarish" and reports from its workers venturing into one cut-off area.
At least 48 people had been killed and the death toll was expected to rise, said Nugroho.
Three people died in Oaxaca during Saturday's tremor, including a man who was attacked by a swarm of wild bees, authorities said.
The earthquake struck 32 years to the day after a devastating 1985 quake and less than two weeks after a powerful tremor killed nearly 100 people in the south of the country.
"I had never been anywhere where the earth moved so much. At first I laughed, but when the lights went out I didn't know what to do."
Full estimates are still being determined, but it's reported over 30,000 of the evacuees were tourists.
Epicenter of quake located 91 km northeast of the city of Christchurch, where an Israeli backpacker died in an earthquake 5 years ago.

The USGS said the quake was centered 68 km east southeast of Perugia. It was 108 km deep.
