Apple is expected to refresh its headphone lineup this September with the unveiling of the fourth generation of AirPods - according to a report by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. As per the publication, suppliers have been asked to commence production of the new models as early as May, replacing the AirPods 3. Based on this timeline, Gurman anticipates the headphones to be launched towards the close of September or early October.
The two new models are expected to feature a new design tailored for better fit, enhanced sound quality, and an updated charging case with USB-C connectivity.
Gurman adds that the more premium model will also include active noise cancellation and a built-in speaker in the charging case, capable of playing sound for locating purposes via the Find My service.
Furthermore, according to the report, we learn that the code names for the two models are B768E and B768M, intended to replace the current product lineup, where Apple concurrently sells the second generation (AirPods 2) at a price of $129 and the third generation (AirPods 3) at a price of $179.
In fact, following lower-than-expected sales of the third generation, Apple hopes that the new versions will be a hit. According to Gurman, Apple will produce between 20 to 25 million units of the new models, which if realized, will make the headphones the largest launch ever for AirPods.
Additionally, later this year, Apple is expected to refresh the AirPods Max model, which will come with USB-C charging port - likely without any other new features. And what about new AirPods Pro? Gurman explains that Apple does not plan to launch a new version at least until 2025.
