Abbas undergoes medical checks in Ramallah hospital

Amid reports that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas had been hospitalized on Thursday, official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that the 81-year-old had visited a Ramallah hospital for standard medical checks.

Doctors reportedly confirmed that he was in good health, and Saeb Erekat, the Palestinian Authority chief negotiator, confirmed their conclusions.

For years Abbas has battled rumors that his health condition is deteriorating. Thursday's report came the day after Channel 2 reported that a nephew of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was expected to be a contender to replace Abbas when he leaves office.
