The Nazareth District Court on Tuesday sentenced Assad Shibli, 22, to nine years in prison for running over and killing Tal Zino, 9, in Kfar Tavor on Yom Kippur in 2007. His friend, Mohammad Ma'moun Shibli, who was in the back seat of the ATV, was sentenced to two years for fleeing the scene after the accident and not administering medical assistance.
Assad Shibli also received a suspended sentence of three years and was ordered pay the bereaved parents NIS 50,000, while his friend was given a suspended sentence of a year and fined NIS 15,000.
Some two years ago, prosecutors filed an indictment against the residents of the Galilee village of Shibli for their part in the killing while driving an all-terrain vehicle and hitting Zino, who was riding her bicycle in the northern community. She sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Afula's Ha'emek Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.
Assad Shibli was charged with manslaughter, despite the fact that the Northern District Attorney's Office had initially considered charging the driver with murder.
According to the indictment, two weeks before Yom Kippur, the driver, Assad Shibli had gotten into an argument with a Border Police volunteer in Kfar Tavor, who had criticized him for his wild driving.
"You'll see what we'll do to you on Yom Kippur," Shibli was quoted as saying to him.
