China calls death of bin Laden 'positive development'

BEIJING - China has joined governments endorsing the U.S. assault that killed Osama bin Laden, putting aside friction with Washington and saying China is also a victim of terror.
"We have noted the announcement and believe that this is a major event and a positive development in the international struggle against terrorism," the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a statement about the White House's announcement that bin Laden, the al Qaeda leader, was killed in a US raid on a compound in Pakistan.
"China is also a victim of terrorism," Jiang said in the statement dated Monday that was issued on the Foreign Ministry's website (www.mfa.gov.cn) early on Tuesday.
"China advocates that the international community should strengthen cooperation and together combat terrorism," said Jiang. "China believes that fighting terrorism should treat both the symptoms and the root causes and strive to eradicate the sources nurturing terrorism."
