Deputy J'lem mayor: Police wanted Carta parking lot open on Shabbat

A day after fierce haredi riots in Jerusalem against the Shabbat opening of the Carta parking lot, Deputy Jerusalem Mayor Kobi Kahlon said that the police had requested that the lot be opened since the parking situation in the Old City had become "intolerable" and had also posed a security risk. Speaking to Israel Radio on Sunday morning, Kahlon noted that haredim had not rioted when former mayor Uri Lupolianski, "one of them," had opened a municipality parking lot in Ein Kerem on Saturdays.
