Egyptians set to vote in parliamentary election

CAIRO — Egyptians are voting in a parliamentary election expected to be comfortably won by President Hosni Mubarak's ruling National Democratic Party.

Egypt has 41 million registered voters, but turnout has traditionally been very low and only 30 to 35 percent of the electorate is expected to cast ballots Sunday for the new, 508-seat legislature.

The main opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood, won a fifth of the seats in the last election in 2005, but a sustained government crackdown has since weakened the movement and it is unlikely to repeat that feat.

Sunday's vote is being held under tight security, with tens of thousands of police deployed across the nation of 80 million in anticipation of violence.
