Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu should make clear to the ultra-Orthodox (haredi) political leadership that all Israeli citizens will be drafted into the IDF if no agreed-upon alternative to the Tal Law is legislated, coalition leader Ze'ev Elkin said Thursday morning.
Speaking with Israel Radio, Elkin said that the topic of personal sanctions against those who do not perform national or military service is not an issue for the Likud or Netanyahu. The coalition leader instead came out against MK Yohanan Plesner's recommendations that did not address the issue of Israeli Arab service with the same urgency as in the haredi communities.Admitting that due to the regional conflicts Israel is engulfed in, Elkin said it is understandable not to ask Israeli Arabs to service in the military. "But the moment you start talking about civilian service, work in health education and welfare... why not?"
"There's no reason why a haredi (youth) can do civilian service and an Arab can't," he repeated.
