EU moves to sanction Ivory Coast president

BRUSSELS  — A European Union spokeswoman says Ivory Coast's President Laurent Gbagbo and his wife face sanctions after disputed elections in the West African country.
Maja Kocijancic, the spokeswoman for the EU's external action service, says the pair are on a list of 19 names that is awaiting approval by the EU member states, likely toward the end of this week.
Last week, the EU said it would impose sanctions, including an assets freeze and a visa ban, on Gbagbo and his wife if he hadn't conceded defeat by Sunday.
International pressure is mounting for Gbagbo to give up power to opposition leader Alassane Ouattara, whose election victory has been recognized by the United Nations, the United States, former colonizer France and the African Union.
