Former president Katsav lodges amended appeal

Following the rejection in August by the Prison Service Parole Board for reduction of his sentence, former president Moshe Katsav has sent a revised appeal to current president Reuven Rivlin.
The appeal, the third made by Katsav this year, has been forwarded to the Justice Ministry for a legal opinion, after which Rivlin will discuss it with his legal adviser Orit Corinaldi-Surkis.  Up until now, Rivlin, has not shown any clemency towards sex offenders, nor did Shimon Peres before him, and Katsav was sentenced not only for sexual harassment, but also for rape.
Katsav has consistently denied the charges that were brought against him, and refused to express remorse for something that he said he had not done. Katsav who was given a seven year sentence, has spent slightly less than five years in Ma’asiyahu prison.  Under ordinary circumstances, had he expressed remorse and undergone a rehabilitation course, he would in all probability be free by now. But the only real taste of freedom was during the Rosh Hashana holiday period, which was permitted to spend at home in Kiryat Malachi with his wife Gila and members of his family.
