Foul play not suspected in jail death

Police do not suspect criminal wrongdoing in the death of a Palestinian man found dead in a holding cell at the Jerusalem District Police station earlier this month, a spokesman for the district said Tuesday.
The man, 36-year-old Reshek Asraf of east Jerusalem, was arrested earlier in the month after allegedly beating his wife, and had been taken to the Shefet Police Station to await processing by the Prisons Service.
In a statement released on May 16, police said that while in his cell, he apparently broke a fluorescent light bulb and used the glass to slit his throat.
The story reemerged this week after members of Asraf’s family came forward to say they suspected foul play. A judge has been appointed to investigate the incident, and police are conducting their own probe. Asraf was not under a suicide watch at the time.
