Gay marriage bill advances in Maryland

WASHINGTON - A measure championed by Democratic Governor Martin O'Malley to make Maryland the eighth US state to legalize gay marriage advanced in the state legislature on Monday, winning joint approval by two committees of the House of Delegates.
The measure now goes to the House floor on Wednesday. The state Senate also must approve it. Democrats hold majorities in both chambers of the legislature.Momentum for gay marriage has grown at the state level in the past week, with Washington state legalizing it, the New Jersey Senate backing it and a court in California striking down that state's ban on same-sex nuptials.
