Gazan dies in smuggling tunnel collapse

Gazan dies in smuggling

A Palestinian health official said a smuggler has been killed in the collapse of a tunnel under the Gaza-Egypt border. Dr. Moaiya Hassanain of the Gaza Health Ministry said the man killed Friday was 25 years old. Border smuggling provides income for hundreds of Gazan men willing to risk frequent tunnel collapses for jobs that are rare in the poverty-stricken territory. Smugglers operate a network of underground tunnels to haul goods into Gaza, which has been under an Israeli-Egyptian blockade since 2007. The goods include cement, cattle, chocolate and weapons. Israel has bombed the tunnel areas repeatedly, making collapses increasingly common. Hassanain said 127 people have died in the tunnels since 2007.
