German FM: PA UN recognition opens door for direct talks

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said on Friday that the door for direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians is now opened following the UN vote in favor of granting the Palestinians a non-member observer state status.
"At the current state, it is extremely important not to allow a continuous hardening of positions," the foreign minister said. "Instead, all efforts should be focused on finding a just and fair solution for the two states," he added.
Westerwelle, whose country chose to abstain in Thursday's vote, regretted that a unified European position on the subject was not achieved.
"Germany will continue to work with all of its power to reaching a two-state solution and a stable peace in the Middle East," he said.
