Germany's Holocaust memorial marks 5th anniversary

BERLIN - An official at Germany's Holocaust memorial says the 2,700 gray slabs in the heart of Berlin and the museum have attracted millions of visitors in their first five years.

Uwe Neumaerker, director of the foundation running the memorial, told reporters Tuesday that the documentation center located beneath the field of slabs has had 2.3 million visitors since opening in 2005. The number was split equally between Germans and foreigners.

The memorial to the Holocaust's 6 million Jewish victims is located near Berlin's Brandenburg Gate and accessible around the clock. Only visitors to the museum are counted.

Parliament speaker Norbert Lammert said the memorial has established itself as a new landmark and a part of the capital's life.
