Groups: Environmental reps must remain on Petroleum Council

The government must disregard the Ministry of Energy and Water's request to withdraw a recently approved amendment to the Petroleum Law, which includes an addition of two environmental representatives to the Petroleum Council, green groups argued on Monday.
Two weeks ago, the Knesset Economic Affairs Committee had authorized this change, at the behest of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI) and the Environmental Protection Ministry. The Energy and Water Ministry's request is slated to be heard on Tuesday, at this week's cabinet meeting.
The request to leave the amendment in place comes from five organizations – SPNI, Zalul, the Israeli Energy Forum, Life and Environment and Green Course – who collectively said that the ministers have a "historic opportunity to fix a distorted situation."
