Hamas marks 1 year after Cast Lead; many in Gaza stay home
Hamas marks 1 year after
By JERUSALEM POST STAFF
Hamas loyalists marked the one-year anniversary of Operation Cast Lead against with defiant protests and a moment of silence on Sunday - even as most of the territory's residents ignored commemorative events and some even criticized the terrorist group for not attending to their needs instead.
Cars whizzed by and pedestrians kept walking, ignoring a siren meant to call for a minute's silence. Hamas leader Hayyeh's Jabaliya protest did not even fill the sandy square where Israeli aircraft dropped bombs onto the house of senior Hamas leader Nizar Rayyan, killing him and about a dozen of his family and neighbors.
Many Gazans interviewed on Sunday said that while they carried painful memories of the bruising Israeli assault, they would have preferred Hamas to act less triumphantly.
