High Court orders state to review length of detention

The High Court of Justice on Wednesday ordered the state to consider shortening the period of time that the authorities can detain a suspect in jail for questioning before bringing before a judge for the first time.According to current military law, a Palestinian suspected of a non-security-related crime can be held for eight days, whereas Israelis, including settlers living in the West Bank, can only be held for 24 hours, or 48 hours in special circumstances.According to a reform proposed by the state, the period for Palestinians would be reduced to 48 hours or 96 hours in special circumstances. Supreme Court Justice Dorit Beinisch told the state to consider shortening the time for Palestinians even more.
