IBA to suspend purchase of overseas productions

The Israel Broadcasting Authority will suspend purchase of overseas productions. The decision was made by the executive board of the IBA following a proposal by IBA chairman Amir Gilat, who said that the IBA has an obligation to local producers and directors.
There was no point in buying films made abroad, said Gilat, if the IBA was deviating from the Broadcasting Authority Law which requires it to encourage local productions by devoting a significant part of its budget to local acquisitions. As soon as funds become available he said, they should be directed towards the purchase of local productions in accordance with the law.
This does not mean that the IBA will cease broadcasting foreign television series. For instance it has a long term arrangement for future CSI series, particularly CSI New York.
The decision to focus primarily on Israeli productions is not only a matter of legality, said Gilat, but a moral responsibility which will find expression in the IBA's 2012 budget, and which can be considered as an initial step in the implementation of IBA reforms.
