Iranian cleric: We'll put British Embassy employees to trial

A senior Iranian cleric suggested on Friday that detained local staff from the British embassy in Teheran would be put on trial in the Islamic Republic for their alleged role in post-election unrest, Reuters reported. Iran earlier this week detained nine Iranian employees of the British embassy over allegations of involvement in street protests that erupted after the disputed June 12 presidential election. Most detainees have since been released. Iran claims only one employee is still held, while the British government says there are two who remain in detention. "In these developments their embassy here maintained a presence in which individuals were arrested and inevitably they will be tried as they have [made] confessions," Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati told Friday prayer worshipers in Teheran. Jannati heads the Guardian Council, a powerful constitutional watchdog. In London, a Foreign Office spokeswoman said the UK was seeking clarification following Jannati's statement. "The accusations against them are without foundation," she said.
