Iraqi FM asks for US assistance in formation of next gov't

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari asked the US on Wednesday to help Iraq's politicians form a new government to prevent the continuation of an ongoing power vacuum that could destabilize the fragile country.
Political parties in Baghdad have been jockeying for positions in a new governing coalition with political negotiations deadlocked since an inconclusive March 7 election. The paralysis extends even to the question of who should serve as the next prime minister and president.
"Gone are those days when American officials used to interview officials, ministers, and so on. This is an Iraqi-led process, but we believe they can help," Zebari was quoted by Reuters as saying during a visit to Washington.
