Israel and US update bilateral aviation agreement

Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz and United States Ambassador to Israel James Cunningham signed a bilateral aviation agreement, In Jerusalem, on Wednesday. The new agreement, is an update to a previous agreement signed in 2001 and will give Israeli airlines the option to fly to any US destination and from there to any other international destination.

According to Katz, the agreement will allow Israeli and American airlines to sign limitless code share agreement, enabling them to fly to and from any international destination via the United States.

The option for Israeli airlines to sign code share agreements and open new destinations in the United states is contingent on Israel raising its Federal Aviation Authority safety ranking from category 2 to Category 1.

In December 2008 the FAA changed Israel’s aviation safety standard rating to Category 2 following an assessment of the country’s civil aviation authority. Israel’s Civil Aviation agencies have been working on regaining its safety ranking ever since.
