Jewish doctor murdered in Ukraine

Ukrainian news media reported on Saturday that a doctor and prominent member of the Jewish community in the city of Lviv in western Ukraine was beaten to death near his home early on Friday morning.
The victim was Dr. Leon Freifeld, the head of the orthopedic department of a hospital in the city, who also served as a professor at the Lviv Medical University.
According to one Ukrainian news source, the assailant was a 26-year old foreign national who was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and viciously beat his victim.
The motives for the attack remain unclear, although another Ukrainian news website reported that the attacked was a former Arab student of Freifeld who had recently been expelled from the institute where the professor taught.
The details could not be immediately confirmed.
