News reports said Kurdish protesters threw stones and firebombs at police in Istanbul and southeast Turkey as tensions escalated over the arrest of dozens of Kurds on charges of links to rebels. Dogan agency said police dispersed dozens of protesters in Istanbul's largely Kurdish Gazi district on Sunday. Police in the southeastern towns of Yuksekova and Hakkari used water canons and tear gas against demonstrators on the second day of violent protests. The Anatolia news agency said at least one police officer was hurt in Yuksekova. Prosecutors on Friday charged 23 Kurds, including seven mayors, with ties to a political arm of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, which is fighting for autonomy.
