Landau pulls 'kosher electricity' bill

Energy and Water Minister Dr. Uzi Landau instructed his director-general to retract a proposed bill known as "kosher electricity," after public pressure mounted against the bill and the ministry this weekend. "Kosher electricity" would have given the Chief Rabbinate the authority to oversee operations at the Israel Electric Corporation, an idea that protesters feared would alter the status quo of the country.
Landau, on the other hand, had argued that the bill would prevent the endangerment of human lives, as thousands of haredi families unhappy with the the IEC are today using generators and pirated connections to power their homes on Shabbat.
"As the person responsible for the supply of reliable and safe electricity to residents of Israel, safeguarding human lives is a top priority issue of very important value," Landau said in a statement released by his office, adding that the ministry intends to check and correct the current version of the bill.
