Last month was busy for organ transplantation teams

January was a record month in organ donations and transplants, according to Israel Transplant and the ADI organ donor registration center. Eight families agreed to donate the organs of their loved ones, resulting in 35 organs being transplanted into 27 Israelis and one organ sent abroad because it was not needed here.
Most of the causes of death was the destruction of the lower brain. Families asked to donate organs by hospital transplant coordinators were all asked about the case of former soccer player Avi Cohen, who died over a month ago following a motorcycle accident; his family refused to have his organs removed after he suffered lower-brain death because his heart continued to beat. As the media explained the difference between brain death and the cessation of breathing, families understood it better and realized that the destruction of the lower brain meant the person could not recover in any way, Israel Transplant said on Tuesday.
Organs were harvested at Soroka University Medical Center, Rabin Medical Center-Beilinson Campus and Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center. The organs were transplanted at Hadassah University Medical Center, Beilinson, Rambam Medical Center and Sourasky.
