Law to aid battered women set for plenum vote

A bill aimed at encouraging more battered women to take a stand against violent partners was prepared for its second and third (final) plenum readings in the Knesset Labor, Welfare and Health Committee Monday.
The legislation, which was presented by nine Knesset Members, will go for a vote in the plenum in the near future. If successful, women who stays at any one of the 13 government-sponsored shelters for more than a month will be eligible for income support from the National Insurance Institute.Currently, women who do find the courage to walk out of a violent relationship must forgo any state benefits the minute they enter the shelter.
The legislation, which was brought for its first reading in November a few days ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, faced opposition from the treasury. Thursday, International Women’s Day will be marked worldwide.
