Law to aid survivors passes first reading

A bill to improve care and ease the suffering of thousands of Holocaust survivors passed its first reading Thursday in the Knesset Committee for Labor, Welfare and Health.

If approved, the legislation, which will now go on for two further readings before becoming law, will enable survivors receiving compensation from Germany for the atrocities suffered during World War II to be eligible for a discount in nursing care.

Currently, the elderly in need of nursing care are only eligible if their total monthly income amounts to less than NIS 8,307 per person. For some receiving compensation from Germany, their monthly income exceeds this, making them not eligible for the nursing aid.

The law is being presented by committee chairman MK Haim Katz (Likud) and MK Rachel Adatto (Kadima).
