Livni: Proposed laws will turn Israel into dictatorship

Opposition leader Tzipi Livni castigated Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Wednesday for supporting a series of laws she says undermine Zionism and Israel's democratic character.
"In Egypt they're revolting and trying to make a democracy like us, and we are passing laws that will turn Israel into a dark dictatorship," Livni said at a Knesset session.
Livni specifically pointed to recent legal and policy debates over increasing the fine for libel laws, regulating supreme court nominations, limiting foreign funding of NGOs and preventing women from publicly singing in the army.
"We cannot turn Judaism into a religion that tramples women's rights. In the State of Israel, our Jewish democracy, women are equal to men in the army, at work, in the street and on the bus," the Kadima leader continued.
Ignoring jeers from members of the sitting coalition, Livni closed: "I admit, I never believed that I would be forced to to fight for the nation's democracy. I thought all of us in this house agreed on that."
