Machane Yehuda merchants protest, halt J'lem traffic

Traffic was halted for over an hour on Agripas Street in downtown Jerusalem on Tuesday afternoon by dozens of merchants at the Mahane Yehuda shuk who are furious with the city's transportation engineers for diverting much of the traffic from Jaffa Street onto the narrow Agripas Street due to the Light Rail.

Activists claimed that over 2,000 buses use Agripas Street every day, contributing to noise, pollution, and traffic that makes it difficult for people to get to the market. Police arrested two demonstrators for disturbing the peace. Traffic returned to normal around 2:00 p.m.
