NGO asks Attorney General to review Liberman's fitness to be minister

The Movement for Quality Government in Israel on Thursday asked Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein to write a position paper on whether recently acquitted Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman is fit to serve as a government minister.

After his acquittal on corruption charges on Wednesday, sources said Liberman would be sworn in as foreign minister again next week, returning to the post that he held in the last Knesset.

In its letter to Weinstein, the NGO stressed that even though the court did not find Liberman guilty at the criminal standard of "proof beyond a reasonable doubt", it did state that he had "acted inappropriately."

"Despite the fact that his [Liberman's] actions were inappropriate, immoral, and fall below the expected standard of a public representative, especially that of a minister in the government of Israel, a reasonable doubt remains. . ." the NGO quoted from the court's decision.

The organization argued in the letter that the test to satisfy a criminal conviction is not the only parameter that the prime minister can use when he decides to appoint a minister.

Due to the court's description of his conduct, the prime minister "must certainly take into account" Liberman's actions when he makes his decision, the NGO wrote.
