Tel Aviv University's eighth president was chosen on Wednesday evening after the institution's Senate plenum and executive council unanimously approved Professor Joseph Klafter's candidacy. Klafter, who currently serves as chairman of the Academic Board of the Israel Science Foundation, is an internationally renowned physical chemistry professor. "I see the president's mission as continuing to build the academic force. Our strength derives from the quality of our research staff. The executive council and the senate must now combine forces to move our institute forward… Times of harsh crises can provide the opportunity to set forth a great vision," Klafter said upon being appointed. The Senate plenum congratulated the new president and wished him luck on his mission to "return the university to a course of growth, to improve the funding, the achievements and image of higher education and research at Tel Aviv University and in Israel."
