Report: Jordan seeking to buy water from Lake Kinneret

Authorities in Amman are in negotiations with Israel to purchase water from Lake Kinneret in order to cope with severe water shortages in the northern Jordan, Jordanian newspaper Al-Arab Al-Yawm said Monday.

According to the report, a Jordanian Water Ministry official said that last year Jordan secretly bought two million cubic meters of water from Israel in order to cope with their water crisis.

Israel sold Jordan the water for 30 Jordanian qirsh (cents), two of which went to the electricity costs of pumping the water.

Al Jazeera reported that according to the Jordan-Israel peace agreement, Jordan is allowed 25 cubic meters of water in the summer, and an additional 10 million by pumping allowance.

Jordan is also allowed to pump excess water from the Yarmouk River into the Kinneret during the winter and pump back up to 20 million cubic meters in the summer.

This year, however, the water level of the Yarmouk was down, which meant that Jordan needed to take more from the Kinneret than the Yarmouk was feeding it.
