Security being stepped up in British Jewish communities

British police are to step up security in Jewish areas of the country in response to last week's attacks in Paris which killed 17 people.
Britain's top counter-terror police officer confirmed on Friday (January 16) that they would increase their presence and patrols around synagogues and Jewish schools.Last Thursday (January 8), a man armed with automatic weapons seized several Jewish hostages in Paris's Vincennes district, two days after an attack on the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo satirical weekly left 12 dead. In total, 17 victims were killed in three days of violence.
"In those communities, people will see more patrols," said the Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner for Specialist Crime and Operations, Mark Rowley. "They'll see more patrols, particularly in areas where the Jewish community centres are if you like and it's at synagogues and at schools and we'll be working on exactly the detail of that and how that best works with them and say local community leaders."
Last week, the Community Security Trust (CST), which provides security advice to Britain's estimated 260,000 Jews, said police in London and Manchester in northern England had agreed to increase patrols at synagogues and other venues over the next days.
