Spanish prime minister visits Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan — Spain's prime minister is in Afghanistan for a surprise visit to meet his country's troops and the Afghan president.
Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero met Saturday with President Hamid Karzai and other Afghan officials. No details of the visit were announced, but Spain has about 1,500 troops in Afghanistan.
Spain has lost nearly 100 troops or police in a deployment that began in 2002. It was unclear how long Zapatero would stay in Afghanistan, but he is to meet Pope Benedict XVI in Spain on Sunday as the pontiff wraps up a two day visit.
