Turkey: We're not insisting on resuming Israel-Syria mediation

Turkey Were not insist

Turkey says it is not insisting on resuming its mediating role in Israel-Syria peace talks. Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Burak Özügergin was quoted by the Zaman newspaper on Thursday as saying that "everyone knows" why the indirect talks broke down last year, apparently referring to the IDF's Operation Cast Lead in Gaza last winter, and said "contradictory" statements on Turkey's possible role were bring issued from Israel. "We are not insisting on being a mediator no matter what," he said, according to the Turkish newspaper. "But this is something which matters to our region and we always say that we will do our best." The spokesman was responding to remarks made by Foreign Ministry Avigdor Lieberman, who said Sunday that he was opposed to Turkish mediation in Israel-Syria peace negotiations. Özügergin confirmed that Defense Minister Ehud Barak would visit Turkey in the near future.
