UK Home Secretary: Human Rights Act protects terrorists

British Home Secretary Theresa May told the Telegraph on Sunday that she wanted to see the UK Human Rights Act scrapped, saying it has hampered the Home Office's efforts in deporting people who are foreign criminals or potential terrorist suspects.

According the Telegraph, the Coalition has set up a commission of human rights experts in order to examine replacing the act with a British Bill of Rights.

The Telegraph cited examples of criminals using the law to prevent deportation, such as Iraqi who killed two doctors and managed to convince the court that it would be a "breach of his rights" to deport him.

The UK law is based on the European Convention on Human Rights, and has widespread support from Liberal members of the British government, including Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, who announced a few weeks ago "[The act] is here to stay."
