US senators say world is failing Syrians

YAYLADAGI, Turkey - US senators John McCain and Joseph Lieberman on Tuesday said the international community was "failing" the Syrian people and must arm a rebellion to end President Bashar Assad's year-long crackdown in which 10,000 people have died.
McCain, speaking to reporters after visiting a refugee camp at the Syrian-Turkish border, also called for foreign powers, led by the United States, to help the rebels set up and defend zones within Syria where they could receive military training.
"The international community is failing the people of Syria," he said. "The only way to reverse this is to help the opposition change the military balance of power on the ground."
Lieberman, an independent from Connecticut, said: "We must give arms to freedom fighters to help them defend themselves and their families, at a minimum."
