US: Up to Libyans whether Gaddafi stays in Libya

WASHINGTON - Muammar Gaddafi must give up power but it is up to the Libyan people to decide whether he would be allowed to remain in Libya, the White House said on Wednesday.
"He needs to remove himself from power ... and then it's up to the Libyan people to decide," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters when asked whether the United States agreed with France's view that Gaddafi could stay in Libya as long as he relinquishes power.
