Israel's 'anti-porn' party launches campaign
One party list running in next month’s general election is “Defending Our Children – No More Feeding Them Pornography.”
The party launched its campaign on Wednesday, releasing an online video meant to highlight the need to combat Internet pornography and its exposure to children.
“We have abandoned the place in which our children dwell,” reads the title of the video.
“Defending Our Children” first ran for the Knesset in 2006. It was headed at the time by Avraham Negosa, a politician who is currently on the Likud slate. The party failed to cross the minimum vote threshold.
It also ran in the 2012 election, but dropped out of the race just before voters went to the ballot boxes.
The head of the party is Yehezkel Shtelzer, an ultra-Orthodox man from Kiryat Ya’arim. A 43-year-old father of six children, Shtelzer chairs an organization devoted to cracking down on pornography.
“There are hundreds of thousands of porn addicts in this country,” Shtelzer said. “I need the state’s assistance in preventing [the spread of pornography]. It is totally irrational for a nine-year-old boy to be exposed to pornography. If his parents want, they could buy him Internet access for his birthday, but the rest of the public should have filtered Internet.”
“When you go to the mall, you don’t expect a child to be vulnerable to this kind of thing because there are laws in place,” he said. “On the Internet, however, everything is open.”
