Petah Tikva-based start-up Sleeprate has partnered with Dutch electronics giant Philips to launch a personalized mobile sleep-improvement program and help everyone get a better night’s sleep, the companies announced Thursday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Lack of sleep costs the US economy $411 billion annually, and the equivalent of 1.2 million working days due to lower productivity, according to the RAND research organization. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one-third of American adults do not get sufficient sleep on a regular basis.
The Philips SmartSleep Better Sleep program, due to launch later this year, will include a subscription to Sleeprate’s mobile sleep-analysis solution and custom program content from Philips, including a sleep journal and program guide, as well as a scented pillow spray designed to function as a behavioral trigger to support the sleep experience.
“The partnership with Philips’s Sleep and Respiratory Care Division, a global leader in sleep health, will bolster the leading technological edge developed at Sleeprate,” said Dr. Anda Baharav, founder and chief scientist at Sleeprate.
“We aim to provide a smart mobile platform that empowers people to regain their lost sleep, thereby improving their days, health, performance and overall quality of life.”
Sleeprate’s monitoring app combines reported behavior- and sleep-related data with sleep metrics gathered from wearable devices including Apple Watch and Fitbit. Its algorithms then flag previously unidentified sleep problems and build a personalized plan to improve the user’s sleep.
The program is based on an adaptation of the cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia approach to sleep treatment, working in weekly cycles until the user’s sleep improves.
More than 100,000 users have used Sleeprate’s analysis technology, according to the company, and 40 million hours of sleep have been monitored to date.
“At Philips, we believe there is always a way to help people achieve balanced, energetic and healthy lives,” said Philips’s John Frank.
“Just like food, water and air, sleep is essential for survival, and yet it is often the first health pillar to be compromised. By teaming up with like-minded companies like Sleeprate who also prioritize preventative health, we can help people realize the true power of their sleep.”
