Environmental Protection Minister Amir Peretz has ordered an investigation into claims that a branch of the Aroma café chain in Tel Aviv has been poisoning birds in the area.
Staff members of the branch in the Ramat Hahayal neighborhood told a customer that they had spread the poison to stop birds from entering the café and coming into contact with the food, Jerusalem Online reported.
The website quoted the customer as saying that she saw dozens of sick birds, many of them dying, in the vicinity of the café.
Aroma Tel Aviv said in response that it was "shocked by the incident, and see[s] any incident where animals are put [in] danger as a serious offense," Jerusalem Online reported. The café chain also pledged to investigate, and, if necessary, file a formal police complaint.
