The amendments, which were approved by Egypt's parliament last week, will extend Sisi's current term to six years from four and allow him to run again for a third six-year term in 2024.

The proposed amendments were submitted to the speaker of parliament on Sunday. Any changes need approval by two-thirds of parliament members, followed by a referendum.
There have been two elections, and Sisi won both overwhelmingly. He received almost 40 million votes. If he was so hated, why did the people not refuse to vote?
"The United States is responsible for security in the world," the president told CBS.

Supporters say current constitution reflects an Islamist agenda and is insufficient for Sisi to carry out sweeping reforms.
In the crackdown since Sisi's 2014 election, thousands of his opponents and critics as well as alleged Islamist militants and secular rights activists have been arrested.
