Response to Israel receiving the remains of fallen IDF soldier Zachary Baumel; prisoners opposed repatriation.
The remains of IDF soldier Sgt.Zachary Baumel was repatriated to Israel 40 years after he went missing in action.
Another famous Zachariah, the prophet Zachariah, once described himself as a “prisoner of hope” (Zechariah 9:12).
Baumel’s remains were recovered in Syria with the aid of the Russian Army.
So together, the first-graders, parents, teachers and grandparents sing “Hatikva” because it is our beloved anthem and to honor the return of Zachary Baumel, an Israeli home at last.
The widow of the spy who was hanged in Syria in 1965 asked why she was not informed of the return of the body of Zecharia Baumel, and why her husband's body had not yet been returned to Israel.
Zachary Baumel is buried in Jerusalem 37 years after he went missing.
The news the soldiers brought her Wednesday, she said, “was unreal.”
Israel refuses to give details on how Zachary Baumel's body was found so as not to reveal intelligence sources.
