BERLIN — German Chancellor Angela Merkel is back on the road on what she hopes will be the last leg of a journey home from California that turned into a cross-Europe odyssey.

Merkel took off from San Francisco on Thursday, local time — just as German airports started closing because of the cloud of volcanic ash spreading from Iceland. She was supposed to land in Berlin Friday afternoon.Instead, she flew to Lisbon, and continued to Rome on Saturday. The chancellor's delegation then took to Italy's highways in a convoy of an armored car and buses. They spent the night in Bolzano, in northern Italy.

The German news agency DAPD quoted her as saying before she departed Sunday: "We felt very comfortable (here), and now we're all looking forward to our journey home, to Berlin."
