IDF OC Southern Commander Maj.-Gen. Eyal Zamir has dismissed Lt.-Col. Elad Cohen amid allegations that he abused his position of authority to gain sexual favors.

Cohen, the commander of Israel's first mix-gender Caracal combat unit was suspended Tuesday for 30 days in light of an investigation into suspicions that he was having a consensual sexual relationship with a subordinate officer, which is forbidden in the military.

Cohen, who is married with children, served as Commander of the Caracal Battalion since 2015 and was due to complete his position in the coming weeks, regardless of the investigation.

Data from the IDF’s support center for victims of sex crimes showed an increase in claims of sexual harassment in the army, with 802 cases of sexual assault in the army in the past year compared to 686 in 2015. Previous years found  777 reports in 2012, to 930 in 2013 and 1,073 in 2014.
