Knesset speaker Rivlin to head to Ireland

Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin will become the highest-ranking Israeli to visit Ireland since 1985 when he begins an official trip to the country on Tuesday. Despite strained ties between the countries in the past, Ireland has upgraded the visit, inviting Rivlin to meet with president Michael Higgins and to stay at the official guest house where US President Barack Obama and Queen Elizabeth II of England were recently hosted.
The last senior Israeli official to visit Ireland was President Haim Herzog, whose son, MK Isaac Herzog, will accompany Rivlin on the trip. Rivlin will be a guest of Sean Barett, who title is Ceann Comhairle (chairman) of Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Oireachtas (parliament) of Ireland, who visited Israel six months ago. He will also meet with Paddy Burke, the head of the upper house of the Irish parliament, the Seanad Éireann.
On his way home to Israel, Rivlin will stop in London for a meeting with Baroness Frances D’Souza, the speaker of the British House of Lords.
