Meretz faction chairman Ilan Gilon officially joined the race for Meretz leader on Thursday, joining MK Zehava Gal-On in the February 7 contest. Additional candidates could join the race by the December 28 deadline.

Gilon said the race was between two people who are fit for the job and promised that the campaign would be fair.

"The race should be decided based on whom could bring new sectors to the party," Gilon said in a veiled attack on Gal-On, who specializes in diplomatic and civil issues.

"The socioeconomic protests expressed the need for a candidate with the socialist agenda I represent."
