Obama, Erdogan discuss Syrian unrest, Iranian nuke program

US President Barack Obama spoke by telephone Friday with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the Iranian nuclear program and the current unrest in Syria, according to a White House press statement.

The two leaders discussed how Iran should "engage with the international community" about its nuclear program.

They also discussed the recent protests in Syria, calling them "legitimate demands for democracy" and condemning Assad's violent crackdown against the protesters. They agreed that their two countries should "remain in close contact" to encourage and support the democratic transition underway in the Middle East.
