Three people, a couple and their 17-year-old son, were arrested on suspicion of trying to smuggle 14.5 kilograms of pure opium from Iran to Israel, police said on Thursday.

The Jewish Iranian family was arrested at Ben-Gurion International Airport on Wednesday night, when tin cans containing the drug were discovered in their luggage.

The three suspects will be brought before the Ashkelon Magistrate's Court later Thursday for a remand extension hearing.
